steel rope suspended seat for swinging VITRA citizen armchair by konstantin grcic
with a fluid tubular skeleton, the VITRA citizen by konstantin grcic reinterprets the archetype of the lounge chair. its unconventional design pairs a new freedom of movement with the low-slung body of an armchair. this is with two editions: the highback and lowback.
the revolutionary approach lies in technical innovation: the seat is suspended by three steel wires fastened to the tubular frame
VITRA citizen lowback
a combination of a swivel chair and a chaise lounge (in the high backrest version) and a lounge chair (with low backrest)
‘citizen combines familiar elements with an entirely new type of construction, which we developed together over many years. for me it was a very enriching experience to devote so much time and attention to the development of a single idea,’ says konstantin grcic.
at all angles, the metal frame of the VITRA citizen, designed by konstantin grcic, is deliberately left visible. it not only defines the chair’s character but also its structure and shape. the semi-circular backrest, which ergonomically envelops the sitter’s upper body to prevent slouching, is firmly attached to the tubular steel. the seat itself is then suspended on three cables to create a unique sitting experience through a swinging movement. this dynamism is further enhanced through by a sink-in effect as well as the swivel base.
a chair that can move and swivel freely
the freely suspended seat cushion appears – and comfortably feels – as if it is floating. the resulting design depicts a slim silhouette that evokes a sense of sportiness through its upholstered body’s form. there is a wide range of fabrics and types of leather available for the upholstery. an identical material is used for the seat and backrest, while its neck pillow can be chosen in a different color.
the VITRA citizen is available in two versions: the highback is a lounge chair with a more commanding presence, while the lowback is a more discrete option that can be arranged into groups. the design was originally created for private residences but also addresses the new and developing needs where people work.
